“I saw the angel in the marble
and carved until I set him free."

Becky Blades

Becky Blades is a Kansas City native and career marketing executive. Blades majored in journalism and studied art and photography at the University of Columbia Missouri. She also studied sculpture as a part-time student at the Kansas City Art Institute.

In the summer of 2000 Blades traveled with her family to Paris and studied architectural watercolor and still-life painting with South African artist Ray Johnstone. She returns to France annually to study with Johnstone and to search for materials and inspiration for her mixed media works on paper and canvas.

Artist's Statement:
I make art about the textures and connectedness of our lives. Some bodies of my work stand on the brink of telling a story, while some merely allude to meaning with juxtapositions of shapes and texture.

Each mixed media piece is inspired by a single element of something contained in it – a document, a scrap of lace, an old postcard – but the inspiring element rarely dominates. Each piece evolves differently. And the story or emotion it conjures can be each viewer's secret (although I'll love it if you tell me.)
