10th Anniversary

“I saw the angel in the marble
and carved until I set him free."
— Michelangelo
Dennis Campay

A fusion of European and Southern American cultures has sparked the emergence of this artist as a prime example of American creativity. The United States is a melting pot of contrasting cultures working to find common ground. Dennis Campay’s art embodies this exercise.

Campay’s formative years were spent traveling between Europe and the United States. Frequent crossings initiated his study of comparisons and contrasts in architecture, biology and light. These lessons learned and stories inherited are married in the artist’s current work. A painting by Campay could be a brief view of a canal in Venice or a snap shot of a coastal village in North America. A close inspection may answer the question of “Where?”, but each observer has a different location in answer.

The question of “When?” is more difficult to answer. Campay seeks to emulate the craftsmen of the past who by necessity spent a lifetime perfecting their skills. The sincerity of this purpose and a sense of the time spent in this pursuit smolder in the heart of the artist’s paintings.

Campay entered the art world approximately 12 years ago, during which time he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Atlanta College of Art, Atlanta, GA. Since then, his work has been exhibited in Atlanta, New York, and San Francisco. December 1999 will mark Campay’s international debut at the Florence Biennale, Florence, Italy. He has won numerous awards including, most recently, Open Studios Competition for Southern Painters. Among his most prominent collectors are; the Harn Museum at the University of Florida, Brenan University, Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines, and USAirways.
