S. W. Grimm

Red Stripes

Tempest IV

S. W. Grimm considers himself a “Citizen of the World”. Moving from town to town, growing up in many states and eventually ending up in Europe where he studied arts in Munich Germany, London England and Florence Italy, gave him an ideal background to become a world class artist. Upon finishing his Art Degrees S W Grimm settled in San Francisco where he enjoyed the roll of starving artist and art instructor at the Presidio Arts Center. S W Grimm has shown his work in national galleries from California to New York. Eventually he owned his own gallery in Sacramento California. He currently has his studio in the Kansas City area. “I find the slower pace of the Midwest much more appealing”, he says.

S W Grimm is a multi-media artist who’s abstract works are referred to as music analogies creating depth and motion amongst the many colorful shapes and forms. “I try to keep the imagery in a state of flux devising the composition in a manner that allows one to almost step into the painting. I fill the 2 dimensional space in the same manner I feel that music fills a 3 dimensional space.”, he says. “Some of my inspiration comes from Kandinsky, Pollock, Dine and a myriad of musical influences”. Musicians and music lovers as well as art patrons have commissioned S W Grimm to paint analogies of their favorite compositions, songs or musical styles and his paintings hang in venues across the country. S W Grimm is a musician also, having played in city orchestras, many bands and theaters as well as studying music in the University, so, he has a personal relationship with the subject matter. “I feel an artist needs to understand his tools before he commits himself to producing an image.”, he says. “Just as a musician will ‘jam’ with his fellow musicians I feel it necessary to ‘jam’ with my paintings and drawings. This way I can develop the musical elements that will carry the painting away from the normal and mundane into a new visual realm.”

Not only is S W Grimm an abstractionist but an avid portrait and figurative painter. “To use a cliché, I paint what I see.”, he says. This former ‘Who’s who in America” nominee has firmly placed his feet into the American art community and will continue to endure for years to come. Lets hope so.
